LION CUBS can be such sensational sunbeams. Most of them are bundles of fun, and a source of tremendous pleasure to their parents and everyone else around them.

Nearly every Leo child has a tremendous sense of humour, and is chock-full of fun and frolics. But some of them can be precious and precocious, always wanting to show off. They're the children who play the piano for you when you go to tea, or pirouette about the place in a pink party frock. (Remember Bette Davis in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane!)

If you have a Leo child, you may have already heard that little voice saying 'I want to do this' and 'I want that now!' You may have a battle of wills with your child, because he or she will want to be in control and command. A little Leo can find it very difficult to take orders from you, or will find it hard to accept that he or she is under your thumb, and you're the one who's in charge.

You can get the best out of your Leo child by settling him or her down with a pad of paper, a paintbox or pencils, or lots of books: watch that creativity shine through. And almost as soon as your child can stand, send him or her off to the local drama school, or to take dancing lessons of some sort, whether tap or ballet. If your little Leo has more of an athletic aptitude, he or she should be encouraged to go to youth centres or sports clubs.

The sooner your Leo child begins to mix with other people, testing out that powerful pussycat's personality on others, the better. If you mollycoddle and smother a Leo child, you may risk bringing out the sign's overbearing side.

So don't spoil your Leo kid. (Give one of these Lion cubs an inch and they'll take a yard.) You should bring him or her up on a mixture of love and discipline, in fairly equal doses. (Leos need both; it's no good just giving them one without the other.) Help your Leo to learn that things don't always go the way one would like. And don't allow yourself to be bossed about as though you were the butler or maid. Encourage your Lion cub to help with the washing up, the housework or cooking. And make sure that your little Leo tidies up any mess or muddle he or she might create. Otherwise, your potentially adorable cub will grow up into an egotistical Lion who roars and expects other people to do his or her dirty work.

If you encourage your Leo child to be creative from an early age, you could bring up a budding, brilliant entrepreneur or creative director. You will also have the sort of child who really does brighten up your life, and is the apple of your eye. (A real Golden Delicious!)

There's a sensational sense of warmth, loving and giving in this child. Even at an early age, a little Leo will know the right thing to do to keep you happy. For example, your child may bring you breakfast in bed one day, or pick a posy of pansies for you when you're in the doldrums. In return, encourage your little bundle of joy to bring home lots of friends. It's very important for Leos of all ages to mix with other people. But if you see your Leo child being bossy or bad-mannered, domineering or dictatorial with other small kids, you must put your foot down. Children born under this sign should be disciplined, and though you shouldn't clout your kid, don't forget the old adage, "Spare the rod and spoil the child'. Then you'll turn your kitten into the nicest Leo around!
